Jaeger and I have a cat! At the last Megafest in Lincoln there were three cats. Jaeger seemed to enjoy playing with them and I half jokingly asked him if we could get one. Jaeger is mildly allergic to cats and so I expected an immediate "no." However, he surprised me by aggreeing provided we name the cat Five. We decided to wait to get a cat until we were moved into our house and after Jaeger's mom visited (who is also allergic to cats). We decided to get the cat at the Boulder Valley Humane Society. We wanted a short haired, litter trained cat that was between 2-5 (Jaeger and I didn't think we had the energy needed to get a kitten). The Boulder Humane Society posts all adoptable animals on their website (and apparently updates the list hourly) which made it easier to make a list of cats that seemed suitible. Friday afternoon Jaeger met me at the Humane Society and we wandered into the cat area. Lucy, the first cat we looked at seemed a potential. She was pretty but we couldn't tell how much personality she had. We made a mental note and continued looking. We were nearing the end of cats without finding a better option when we stumbled across Pepe. Pepe is a 4 year old brown tabby. She saw us and started bouncing against the window trying to get close to us. She intrigued us so we asked if we could see her in the cat/people interview room. In the little interview room they provide chairs for us to sit on and cat toys so we can play with the interviewees. Upon entering the room Pepe immediately came to us and started bouncing/rubbing up against us. It was the most bizarre experience. She completely ignored all our attempts to play with her and instead kept rubbing up against us. I don't know how to describe the experience but she was acting almost crazy for a cat. Jaeger and I decided she suited us very well. Jaeger left to go back to work and I continued to fill out paperwork and waited while they tested her for cat leukemia and microchipped her. During the process I changed her name from Pepe to Cat5 (Five for short). Eventually she was put in a carboard carrier and we were on our way home. Five was very unhappy to be cooped up in the carrier. However, we did eventually make it home. She seems to be settling in reasonably well. We have given her the spare room as her official room. Due to allergies, Five is not allowed in the master bedroom and can't be on the couch unless one of us is with her. She has started playing a little but won't run after toys. Five is obsessed with being petted. Unfortunately, in her old home she was an indoor/outdoor cat. Now she is just an indoor cat. I don't like keeping her cooped up indoors but all the major cat associations strongly suggest not letting cats outdoors. Five is not taking this transition well and is meowing at the doors wanting out. Five is a very odd cat and she should be interesting to have around. There is a picture of her at Jaeger's website. |
